It all started when I found myself on my last bottle of store-bought fingerpaint and desperately needed something new (and inexpensive) to occupy my little ones. That’s when I stumbled upon the surprisingly simple world of homemade paint recipes. I was like, seriously? I can make my own paint with stuff I already have in my kitchen?
Well, yeah! These things are not rocket science!
So, I’ve managed to come up with five go-to recipes that are not only easy but super fun for the tiny artists in your life. And the best part?
They’re totally safe for your little ones to use.
Flour-Based Fingerpaint

This fingerpaint recipe is perfect for toddlers. It’s non-toxic and made from ingredients that you likely have in your pantry.
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1 cup water
- Food coloring or liquid watercolors
Instructions:
- Mix the flour and water in a saucepan until it forms a smooth paste. Make sure there are no lumps.
- Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens. It should resemble a custard consistency.
- Allow it to cool completely.
- Divide the mixture into small containers or an ice cube tray.
- Add food coloring or liquid watercolors to each container and mix well.
That’s it,! Now your little ones can fingerpaint to their heart’s content.
Edible Yogurt Paint
Worried about your kids putting paint in their mouths.
This edible paint recipe is safe for them to taste while exploring their artistic side.

- Food coloring
Instructions:
- Spoon yogurt into small containers or an ice cube tray.
- Add food coloring to each container and mix well.
Yep, it’s seriously that simple! This paint is great for young kids who enjoy a sensory experience, and you get peace of mind knowing they won’t be ingesting anything harmful.

- Instructions:
- In a bowl, mix equal parts baking soda and water until you get a thick paste.
- Stir in liquid watercolors or food coloring for desired color.
