If there’s one thing that both delights and terrifies me, it’s children’s boundless imagination. Seriously, have you ever had a conversation with a 4-year-old? Those tiny minds are wild. But while their creativity is awe-inspiring, we sometimes struggle to find ways to nurture and encourage it as they grow older.
Today, I’m going to share 12 ways to encourage creativity in children – based on my experience, research, and some success stories of my own.
So grab a cup of coffee, kick back, and let’s dive into this creative journey together.
I am a big believer in the power of creativity, I’m excited and thrilled to share how you can encourage creativity in your kids.
Here are my 12 Genius Ways To Encourage Creativity In Children.
Genius Ways To Encourage Creativity In Children

1. Create an Art Corner
First, you need a space that allows your kids to be creative. I can’t tell you how many times my living room floor has been transformed into a makeshift art studio!
My 2-year-old seemed to believe every wall in our house was his personal canvas But instead of scolding him, I gave him a designated area where he could get creative. Setting up an “art corner” or a designated creative space lets your child know it’s okay to make a mess, explore, and express themselves.
Designate a special area in your house for fostering creativity, with plenty of art supplies and craft materials nearby. Make sure to let your kids know this is their creative space and they are free to get messy and have fun!
2. Be a Creative Role Model
One thing I’ve learned is that kids take cues from their parents. When they see me reaching for my paintbrush or trying something new (like learning to knit ), it tells them that we value creativity in our household. So, grab your tools.
3. Encourage Open-ended Play
Who needs expensive toys when a cardboard box can hold a million possibilities? I often find that the best toys for sparking creativity aren’t even toys at all.
Encourage open-ended play with simple materials like paper, fabric, or wood scraps. The more versatile the plaything, the more room for imagination!
4. Limit Screen Time
Don’t get me wrong, I totally understand the need for a little screen time (hello, sanity break!), but in moderation. Cutting back on screen time frees up valuable hours for your kids to engage in creative play. It might be hard at first, but trust me, they’ll find new ways to occupy their time and have a blast doing so!
5. Keep a “Creativity Jar”
This little trick has been a lifesaver in my household, especially on rainy days when outdoor play is a no-go. I keep a jar filled with slips of paper, each with a creative prompt or activity idea written on it. Whenever boredom strikes, my little ones reach into the “Creativity Jar” for their next creative fun!
6. Encourage Creative Writing

Oh, the power of pen and paper! Encourage your kids to jot down their thoughts, create imaginary characters, or even write their own stories in a special journal. Not to mention, it’s great for developing their writing skills. Plus, you’ll have a treasured keepsake of their childhood thoughts and dreams!
7. Explore Different Art Forms and Activities
Why stick to coloring when your kids can explore various art forms like clay sculpting, sewing, or even cooking? I’ve found that trying new creative activities helps build confidence in my children, teaching them that they are capable of mastering a new skill. And it’s a fun way to bond as a family too!
8. Emphasize Process over Product
As adults, it’s easy to become fixated on the end result. However, for kids, the creative process is often much more important than the final product.
Encourage and celebrate your child’s efforts during the creative journey, rather than focusing solely on the outcome.
9. Let Them Get Messy
Sure, getting messy can be a tad inconvenient (who doesn’t love cleaning up after playtime? 😀, but sometimes this just comes with the territory of fostering creativity in children. Allow your little ones to get their hands dirty, literally! Whether it’s through painting, baking, gardening or crafting, such hands-on activities encourage exploration and creativity.
10. Use Open-Ended Art Materials
Instead of coloring books or pre-drawn art projects, provide your children with open-ended art materials like blank paper, paint, chalk, and play dough. These materials encourage kids to express themselves freely and think outside of the box.
“If at first you don’t succeed….” You know the saying, right? It’s crucial to remind our kids that they can try again and again .
Encourage them to explore different mediums, materials, and techniques. Play and experimentation help children understand that there’s more than one “right” way to do things and allows them to find creative solutions.
11. Foster a Growth Mindset
A growth mindset is the belief that intelligence and abilities can improve over time through effort and learning. Encourage your child to embrace challenges, persevere through failure, and learn from mistakes. This will nurture their creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
12. Encourage Collaboration
One of the best ways to encourage creativity among children is to give them the opportunity to collaborate with others on a project. Group activities like drawing, painting, or crafting together not only help kids develop their social skills, but also teach them the value of teamwork and collaboration.
